  34.          Other: * The shareware version of this software requires ANSI.SYS 
  35.          (or another ANSI console device driver) to be loaded for the 
  36.          generation of readable output screens, although it will function 
  37.          without such a driver. The Registered version of the program does 
  38.          not require an ANSI driver. The shareware version of the program
  39.          will run under versions of DOS up to and including 4.0, but large
  40.          (> 32 Mb) devices created under DOS 4.0 cannot be tested. Full 
  41.          DOS 4.0 support is incorporated in the Registered version of the
  42.          program.

  44.                                 Program Description
  45.          ******************************************************************
  46.          Purpose: HDTEST allows thorough READ/WRITE testing of a (hard or
  47.          floppy) disk without loss of data.
  48.  
  49.          Features: This (Shareware) version of HDTEST allows thorough, 
  50.          comprehensive Read/Write testing of hard and 5.25", and 3.5" floppy 
  51.          disks on IBM PCs, XTs, ATs, and most reasonably IBM compatible 
  52.          clones. The latest version (sent to Registered users) can be used to 
  53.          test almost all DOS-accessible storage devices currently in use on 
  54.          MS-DOS-compatible computers, including removable (floppy and hard) 
  55.          disks and logically partitioned hard disks. HDTEST can thoroughly 
  56.          test the magnetic media on a device which contains data WHILE 
  57.          PRESERVING THE DATA (although data loss is unavoidable if an area 
  58.          which is in use has become unREADable). HDTEST normally tests the 
  59.          disk much more thoroughly than programs such as DFixer, Mace, and 
  60.          Norton's DT, because it WRITES AND reads multiple test patterns on 
  61.          every sector on the disk, and because it gets below the DOS level to 
  62.          detect errors which are minor enough to be ignored by DOS but may 
  63.          nevertheless warn of developing problems. In addition to its testing 
  64.          function, HDTEST has been reported to be useful as an automatic disk 
  65.          repair utility for both hard and floppy disks which develop 
  66.          (especially) intermittent or persistent read errors, preventing or 
  67.          impeding their normal use. Both versions of the HDTEST package 
  68.          include full documentation on disk and a second program (HDCHEK), 
  69.          which does not write to the disk, and can be used to check that a 
  70.          given hardware/software combination is compatible with HDTEST.
